Quando i comunisti prendono il potere in Cecoslovacchia, il direttore di un piccolo circo cecoslovacco si oppone alla statalizzazione della sua impresa decisa dal regime comunista dopo la presa del potere. La cosa che non sopporta è, in particolare, l'obbligo di inserire nel programma alcuni numeri di carattere politico. L'impresario pensa perciò di rifugiarsi oltre frontiera chiedendo asilo nella zona tedesca occupata dagli americani.
