In eighteenth century Ireland radical intellectuals embraced revolution with tragic results. One was Corkman, Arthur O'Connor, of Ascendancy stock, who was a member of the Irish House of Commons. He later became High Sheriff of Cork, visited France and became strongly republican. Exiled in France he became a General de Division in the French army. He spent his final years writing and publishing and is buried in the grounds of his French estate.
