"Garcia tells a good story. But in Skin Deep he takes the 'Chicano novel' out of the barrio to where it has never been before. Here is a novel about two sides of town—and the life that moves between them. Skin Deep is a novel about a soul in the modern city."—Richard Rodriguez

"An exciting, beautifully paced contemporary novel that is at the same time faithful to its origins, burdened by its past, and dramatically aware of its own cultural options."—Carlos Fuentes
