In 1940, London is in the middle of World War Two; bombers fly overhead nightly, and blackouts are enforced by air-raid wardens. With this violent, uncertain setting, multi-award winner James Robinson and acclaimed artist Paul Johnson spin a masterly tale of love and betrayal... Jack Brookes, an air raid warden kept from the battlefield by a weak heart, is asked to investigate a young fortune-teller who has upset one of his mother's neighbours by telling her that her son, thought to have been killed by bombing, was in fact murdered! Soon, Jack finds himself in love with the mysterious fortune teller, but in deadly danger from a gang of brutal, thuggish killers...
