Le Tartuffe ou L'imposteur : comédie, 1664-1669

Un faux dévot s'installe dans la famille d'Orgon
dont il fait sa dupe, y vit grassement et manifeste
une assez vive sensualité pour courtiser la maîtresse
de maison - avant d'être finalement démasqué.
Le sujet de sa pièce, Molière dut longuement
batailler pour l'imposer en 1669, car, à sa première
représentation à Versailles, la comédie avait été
jugée dangereuse : en décriant les apparences
de la vertu, Molière ne rendait-il pas suspects
les dévots authentiques ?
Car tel est bien l'enjeu sérieux de la pièce : percer
à jour l'hypocrisie tout en nous incitant à méditer
sur le déguisement et la métamorphose.
Mais Le Tartuffe est aussi une comédie de moeurs
et de caractères où la farce s'infléchit vers le drame
et cependant s'harmonise avec lui. Molière fait
passer le spectateur de la gaieté la plus vive
à la réflexion la plus grave, et parfois
la plus sombre.
