In the First and Second World Wars, the protection of the Welsh coast and sea lanes was vital to the continuation of British commerce and industry in the west. The arrival of the U-boat in the First War, and the addition of the bomber in the Second, brought the region into range of German attack. Alan Phillips was born in Pembrokeshire, on the south-west coast of Wales, the region most associated with air defence in the two World Wars. He is a member of the Airfield Research Group and has written several articles for aviation magazines and local newspapers, as well as several books on aviation. He lives in Colwyn Bay.
