The ongoing modern Middle East problem had its origins in the 1967 War between Israel and the Arab world and the ensuing Israeli occupation of a vast expanse of Arab territory. From the start, Washington and Israel had distinct views of the occupation s significance and of its utility in the post-War Middle East.
