In this new book on Minority Fertility in Contemporary China, Chiung-Fang Chang attempts to fill methodological void by using a more appropriate statistical approach of multi-level analysis to examine the applicability of western assimilation perspective on minority fertility in China. In particular, this book attempts to examine the reduction in China s minority fertility that has occurred outside of the one-child family planning policy. This book offers comprehensive discussions on ethnic relations in China and vignettes for each of the minority nationalities at the beginning, followed by the examinations of theoretical and statistical models on minority fertility. This book seeks to widen the scope of discussion by considering potential assimilation effects and alternative policy implications on fertility behavior among China s minority populations. By controlling for the policy effect, Chang argues that the one-child policy is not the sole reason for China s fertility reduction. The effect of assimilation in fact has played an important role in reducing the fertility of the minority populations in China.
