L'île des esclaves : comédie en un acte : 1725

Échoués à la suite d'un naufrage sur une île
gouvernée par des esclaves fugitifs, une coquette
et un petit-maître perdent la liberté tandis que leurs
esclaves désormais affranchis deviennent maîtres
et leur font subir diverses épreuves.
En 1725, c'est un monde social renversé que
Marivaux donne à voir sur la scène du Théâtre-Italien
: la fragilité du pouvoir peut ainsi se dévoiler,
les rancoeurs enfouies se libérer, et le malheur d'une
condition servile s'éprouver. Mais si l'inversion
est bien politique, elle est également ludique, et
cette pièce sérieuse aux faux airs d'utopie est aussi
une comédie : le spectateur s'y amuse aux dépens
des maîtres que leurs valets caricaturent, et il rit
autant des maladresses que commettent ces valets
lorsqu'ils tiennent le rôle des maîtres.
