He made his first-class debut for Somerset in 1993, his Test debut for England, against the West Indies, in August 2000, and has since represented his country in 123 one-day internationals and 76 Test matches, culminating in a historic 2005 Ashes victory against Australia that was rewarded by an MBE. He announced his retirement from international cricket in spring 2008. He is married to Hayley and has two young children.
