While many artists enjoyed freeexpression and prospered during the twentiethcentury, others werestifled by suppressive rulers and regimes. Thelatter was the case with the Romanian composer,singer, and opera director, Nicolae Bretan. In1947, the Communists demanded Bretan join theCommunist Party of Romania (the PCR). Even afterrepeated demands and threats, Bretan refused to jointhe PCR and remained true to his family, friends andhis own principles. In response, the PCRdeclared him a "non-person" and Nicolae Bretan, wellknown to the Romanian and Hungarian public as asinger, stage director, and promisingcomposer, was silenced. Before his death in 1968,Bretan composedthree one-act operas, "Luceafãrul", "Golem",and "Arald", and the Romanian NationalOpera, "Horia", an opera in four acts. Healso composedover 200 art songs in Romanian, Hungarian, andGerman and several sacred works including a Requiem.Thanksto the tirelessefforts of his daughter Judit,Bretan's music is emerging from exile and is beingheard in a freeRomania and across the world.
