Lee (U. of Birmingham) presents a collection of correspondence between Hans Berthe and Rudolf Peierls, two accomplished scientists who made important contributions to 20th-century physics. Ranging from 1927 to 1995, the letters began when Berthe and Peierls were students in Munich and continued throughout their distinguished careers into retirement. They throw light not only on the lives of these two remarkable individuals, but also on the historical circumstances in which they lived and worked, and on the academic and political environments in which they operated. The materials are organized chronologically into four phases in Berthe and Peierls academic development and their working and personal relationship. Each of the four sections is prefaced by brief introductory remarks explaining the background to some of the developments mentioned in the correspondence. Indexed by name only; no index.
