About the author
Dr Jhareswar Maiti
, an P C Mahalanobis distinguished Educator and Suresh & Vidya Nair Chair Professor, is currently a Professor at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He is the founder chairman of the Centre of Excellence on Safety Engineering and Analytics (CoE-SEA) at IIT Kharagpur. He has more than two decades of experiences in teaching, research, and consulting, guided multiple PhD students, executed several funded projects and conducted over 30 training programs for industry. He authored over 220 publications and is in the Editorial Board of Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Safety Science, International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion, and Safety & Health at Work. He has also authored the textbook titled "Multivariate Statistical Modeling in Engineering and Management”. Prof Maiti’s research interests include AI and data science, safety engineering & analytics, risk assessment and uncertainty analysis, quality management, ergonomics & human factors engineering, and VA/AR applications. He is a Fellow Member of Royal Statistical Society, UK and the Institute of Engineers (India). He is also a member of ASQ, INFORMS, IISE, IEEE, ISE (IEA).
Dr. Rajiv Nandan Rai
is an accomplished Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the field of Reliability, Quality and Maintenance Engineering with an Industrial experience of more than two decades in the Indian Air Force, in which he has worked at all levels of maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft, aero engines and their components. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Subir Chowdhury School of Quality and Reliability, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Reliability, Maintenance and Industrial Engineering from IIT Delhi and M Tech in Reliability Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He has authored more than 65 Publications in multiple international journals and conferences, several Books and Book chapters. He has also completed 10 Research & Consultancy projects. He has delivered multiple invited lectures for DRDO Labs, ISRO, HAL, DGQA, L&T, Adani and in several STCs organized by SCSQR, IIT Kharagpur. His research interests include Reliability analysis of repairable systems, Maintenance Engineering, Quality Management and Engineering, Machine Diagnostics and Prognostics.
Dr. Balagopal G. Menon
is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. He obtained his B.Tech degree in Production Engineering from Government Engineering College Thrissur, University of Calicut, Kerala; Master’s degree in Engineering Statistics from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India; and PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management from IIT Kharagpur. He was a visiting research fellow at Salford Business School, Manchester, UK; and a post-doctoral research fellow at the Energy Institute, The University of Texas at Austin, USA. His areas of interest include operations management, simulation, system dynamics and policy planning, applied multivariate statistical analysis, statistical design of experiments and econometric modeling of systems.
Dr. Richa Ahuja
is currently an Assistant Professor in the Centre of Excellence on Safety Engineering and Analytics (CoE-SEA) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. She specializes in transportation safety, resilient infrastructure systems, and risk-informed planning. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Road Safety from IIT Delhi, an M.E. in Transportation Engineering from PEC Chandigarh, and a B.E. in Civil Engineering from Punjab University. Dr. Ahuja’s research integrates engineering, public health, and data science to address post-crash accessibility, transport safety, and sustainable development. Her work has been published in several journals and she has also contributed to national codes and standards through her involvement with IRC, MoRTH, through her role in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
Harshad Shrigondekar
is a researcher and academic in mechanical and safety engineering. He completed his B.Tech from the College of Engineering, Pune, M.Tech from the IIT Kharagpur (M.Tech), and received his Ph.D. from IIT Bombay. His career includes post-doctoral research at IIT Bombay and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, three years of industrial experience at Bharat Electronics Limited, and an assistant professorship at VNIT Nagpur, before joining the Centre of Excellence on Safety Engineering and Analytics (COE-SEA) at IIT Kharagpur in 2023. His research interests span fire safety engineering, hazard identification and risk assessment, smart firefighting systems, automotive safety, process safety, occupational safety, Industry 4.0, and Engineering Education. He has published several research papers and has contributed to conference presentations/publications. He has several research and consultancy projects funded by various agencies, including the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC), IIT Kharagpur, and Kargetu Urban Mobility. He has reviewed the proposals under the ‘Request for Proposals’ (RFP) Cycle-II of Ocean Energy Safety Institute, Texas A&M, Interior Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
