This open access book offers a comprehensive exploration of sustainability discourse, from the GreenComp European sustainability competence framework to global education research perspectives. It highlights how science education can foster environmental awareness, guided by IEA s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors Framework. Using data from TIMSS 2023, the book highlights key policy intentions and theoretical research narratives, mapping them to well-documented educational systems within the European Educational Area. This work aims to inspire further research and foster collaboration among stakeholders engaged in the field of compulsory education.

Dr. Dirk Hastedt
, as the Executive Director of IEA, oversees operations, studies, and services, and drives the overall strategic vision. He develops and maintains relationships with member countries, researchers, policy makers, and other key players. Dr. Hastedt also serves as co-editor in chief of the IERI journal and has conducted research in mathematics as well as education for immigrant students.

 
Dr. Paulína Koršňáková
, Senior Research and Liaison Adviser to IEA, facilitates research networking, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration that enhance capacity building, data use and knowledge sharing to foster innovation and quality in education. She serves as a series editor for the IEA Research for Educators and IEA Teacher Snippets.

 
Dr. Branislav Randjelović
, Dr. Branislav Randjelović is a professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Niš, Serbia, and Methods of Mathematical Teaching at the University of Kosovska Mitrovica. He is former Head of Institute for Educational Quality and Evaluation, Belgrade, Serbia. He has published more than 170 scientific publications in the fields of mathematics, education, and social sciences and is experienced in editorial work, project management and textbook writing.
