This book highlights the design and technologies used in the lunar probes of China s Lunar Exploration Program, covering the Chang'E-5T1 probe and the Chang'E-5 probe, especially the Chang'e-5 Lunar Robotic Sample and Return Probe. This book is written on the basis of the authors actual experience on the design, development and implementation of two missions. The main contents include the system design of lunar robotic sample and return probe, the design and validation of the main subsystems, the Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) technology, and the system validation technology. Finally, this book provides a prospect on future lunar exploration and technical challenges.

About the author

Prof. Mengfei Yang, Academician of China Academy of Science, is an accomplished expert in space technology, a researcher at the China Academy of Space Technology, and a Life Fellow of the International Academy of Astronautics. He has devoted himself to the field of spacecraft research for years and has made significant contributions to the Nation’s lunar exploration project, manned spaceflight, and satellite development. As chief commander and chief designer of the Chang’E-5 probe, Professor Yang led the team to overcome many complex technical issues and successfully completed China's first extraterrestrial sample return mission. He has published four monographs in Chinese and one in English. He has received a total of three national awards, including the National Technology Invention Award and National Science and Technology Advancement Award of China, as well as many provincial-level technical progress awards. In 2023, he received IAA Laurels for Team Achievement as member of Chang’E-5 team.
Prof. Jing Peng is a researcher at the Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering. Since 2011, he has been the deputy chief designer of the Chang’E-5 probe and Chang’E-5T1 probe. He was the chief designer of the Chang'E-8 probe since Aug. 2022. He is a member of the Chinese Society of Astronautics (CSA), a member of the COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection, and a member of the IOAG Expert Group. He has long been engaged in research work in Chinese deep space exploration, and has participated in the proposal, demonstration, development and implementation of China's Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP) and Planetary Exploration of China (PEC). He has published one monograph in Chinese. He has received one National Science and Technology Advancement Award of China, two Science and Technology Advancement Awards of State Administration of Science, Technology, Industry for National Defense of China, and one silver awards of China Patent Award. 
Prof. Wu Zhang is a researcher at the Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering. Since 2011, he has been the deputy chief designer of the Chang’E-5 probe and Chang’E-5T1. He was the chief designer of the Chang'E-6 probe since Aug. 2022. He has long been engaged in system engineering of spacecraft, and has participated in the development and implementation of China's Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP) and Earth remote sensing satellite. He has published one monograph in Chinese. He has received one National Science and Technology Advancement Award of China, several Science and Technology Advancement Awards of State Administration of Science, Technology, Industry for National Defense of China. In 2023, he received IAA Laurels for Team Achievement as member of Chang’E-5 team.
Prof. Jianhua Ruan is a researcher at the Institute of Spacecraft System Engineering. Since 2011, he has been the deputy chief designer of the Chang’E-5 probe and Chang’E-5T1 probe and Chang’E-6 probe. He has long been engaged in system engineering of spacecraft, and has participated in the development and implementation of China's Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP) and Earth telecommunication satellite. He has published one monograph in Chinese. He has received several Science and Technology Advancement Awards of State Administration of Science, Technology, Industry for National Defense of China.
