Why do we obey? How have poets and writers responded to this question? This book investigates the relationship between Euro-American literature and the history of the anarchist movement and culture, from the late 18th century to the first half of the 20th. Adopting a comparative perspective, it examines how the political question of obedience-and its refusal-became integrated into literary discourse.
