About the author

Jean-Pierre Serre is one of the most influential mathematicians of his time. His work helped shape modern algebra, topology, geometry and number theory. He held the Chair of Algebra and Geometry at the prestigious Collège de France for 38 years, lecturing annually on original topics. He has published widely and several of his books have become classics. A leading member of Bourbaki, he contributed to the success of the Éléments de mathématique reference books and the Séminaire Bourbaki. He remains the youngest winner of the Fields Medal and was the first Abel Prize laureate. He currently lives in Switzerland, close to Lausanne.
