Flavius Josephus (37-100 n. Chr.) war einer der bedeutendsten Historiker der antiken Welt. Als junger Priester aus der Jerusalemer Oberschicht hatte Josephus eine aktive Rolle im Jüdischen Krieg. Nach dem Fall von Judäa erhielt er das römische Bürgerrecht und lebte fortan von einer kaiserlichen Pension und dem Ertrag seiner Landgüter in Judäa.
