Les zazous
Le jazz et le swing furent, pendant les années noires de la guerre et de l'occupation, un incroyable champ de liberté, un vent de fraîcheur et d'espérance pour une jeunesse qui, malgré la situation, voulait vivre. À l'intérieur du peu d'espace dont ils pouvaient jouir, les zazous et autres swings, en se démarquant de la grisaille ambiante, s'identifiaient par leurs tenues provocantes, se reconnaissaient dans le jazz qui, venant d'Amérique, représentait l'espoir, et se rassemblaient autour des vedettes françaises, chanteurs et musiciens, qui avaient épouse les formes musicales rythmées. On a souvent dit et écrit que le jazz avait été interdit par l'occupant. Grossière erreur, il n'a jamais été aussi populaire en France que durant cette triste période !
Si les zazous perdirent leur raison d'être avec la Libération, leur souvenir est reste dans l'Histoire et dans les mémoires, et le mot est inscrit à jamais dans le langage populaire. Dieu merci à notre époque, on rencontre encore des zazous !
During the dark years of war and the Occupation, jazz and swing formed an incredible field of freedom ; they brought a breath of freshness and hope to young people who, despite the context, wanted to live. Within the small space that was theirs, the zazous and the swings stood out from the olive-grey ambience in provocative dress that gave them an identity, and they recognised each other in the jazz that, because it came from America, represented hope ; they thronged around French singers and musicians who were stars, those who'd adopted these rhythmical music forms. Its often been written and said that jazz had been banned by the Occupiers. What a mistake : it was never more popular in France than during that sad era. If the zazous lost their raison d'être when the Liberation came, they remained in History and in people's memories, and the word went into French popular speech for ever. And you can still meet zazous today, thank God !
