Christmas Candy for the O'Family is based on something that happened in the house that Lucas lives in. Lucas was five years old when mice stole his candy from his Christmas stocking. The mouse adventure captured the imagination of his parents and his grandparents. This book is written from the story told to B. J., Lucas's grandfather, by the parents of Lucas on Christmas day.
The story takes place in the time of year when small field mice try to find a warm place to live during the winter. Somehow the field mice can manage to find a home where a cat doesn't live, and sometimes they will manage to slip by a cat if there is one in the neighborhood.
Lucas was in kindergarten when the mice made their way to his parent's house where they made their home in an old shoe under Lucas's bed.
On Christmas Eve two of them gnawed a hole in Lucas's Christmas stocking and began stealing candy. Tim, Lucas's father, saw two of the mice carrying one role of sweet tarts to their shoe. When the mice came back, Tim pointed a flashlight beam on them and this frightened one of the mice. In retreating the mouse ran into the wall before running to his hideout.
