Today, democracy is assumed to be the dominant system in the world. It guarantees the development of states as well as the wellbeing and security of societies both internally and externally. However, the practice of state functioning shows that systemic transformation is non-linear and specific to a given state. In the context of political changes, an interesting subject of analysis is the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela: it is a state that is currently at a crossroads in the context of political changes. Venezuela is a democratic state in the sphere of declarations, but an authoritarian state in the functional sphere.

Dr Justyna Marzec is an Associate Professor at the Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Political Science and Journalism, Maria Curie-Sk¿odowska University in Lublin, Poland. Her research focuses on international organizations, armed conflicts, early warning systems, and energy security. She has published extensively on these topics in national and international academic outlets. Dr Marzec holds a post-doctoral degree (habilitation) in international relations.
