Mariupol is the main industrial city in eastern Ukraine. The presence of heavy industry in the city has led to serious air, soil, and water pollution. This poses a threat to the well-being of city residents and is a major obstacle to attracting foreign investment. The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany called on interested parties to jointly develop a project entitled "Clean Air for Mariupol." The main objectives of the project were to develop measures to improve environmental quality and reduce emissions; to draw up a list of measures to protect the population of Mariupol from air, water, and soil pollution; serve as a model for the development of similar projects in other cities. Despite the political tensions, the group of experts developed five areas of activity: to analyze air pollution by fine particles and organic pollutants; to establish a system for monitoring soil contamination by heavy metals; to establish an analytical laboratory for environmental protection; develop and present an environmental report to the public; share experience with other cities.
