About the author
Dr. Jianbing Li is a professor and professional engineer in the School of Engineering at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). He is a Fellow of four national organizations, including Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (FCSCE), Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (FCSSE), Engineers Canada (FEC), and Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC). Dr. Li’s current research focuses on petroleum waste management, wastewater treatment, oil spill response, and environmental decision analysis. He has received over $8.3 M research fund as a Principal Investigator (PI), and produced over 300 publications, including over 200 peer reviewed journal papers. Dr. Li is a finalist of Canada’s Oil Spill Response Challenge (OSRC) and received $1 M in 2024 to develop an environmentally friendly oil spill decanting system. He has trained over 80 highly qualified personnel (HQP) (PhD and MSc, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants). In addition to many university research excellence awards, he received the Dr. Albert Berry Medal that is the pre-eminent award made to a CSCE member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of environmental engineering in Canada. Dr. Li served as the inaugural Chair of the CSCE Northern British Columbia Section and has been serving as the Chair of CSCE Cold Regions Division since 2022. He also served in the Academic Examiners Subcommittee of Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), the Discovery Grant Evaluation Group (Civil, Industrial and Systems Engineering, EG1509) of Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) selection committee (Civil, Industrial and Systems Engineering, 1609). He is currently serving as an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member for seven international journals.
Dr. Clare E. Robinson is a Canada Research Chair in Water Quality and Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western University. She recieved her BEng and PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia. Before joining Western University in 2009, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at EPFL in Switzerland and worked as a Water Engineer for a water supply and sanitation NGO in Bangladesh. She is a registered professional engineer in Ontario. Dr. Robinson specializes in investigating water-borne contaminants in the environnent with a focus on understanding the sources, transport and fate of contaminants in natural and engineered systems. Dr. Robinson’s current research includes evaluating impact of groundwater contaminants on surface water quality, urban stormwater management for water quality control, and determining the impacts of onsite wastewater systems on surface water quality. Dr. Robinson received an Early Research Award from the Ontario Government (2012) and was a member of the International Joint Commission Great Lakes Science Advisory Board from 2014 to 2019. She also was awarded a Western Faculty Scholar (2020-2022) and the Western Green Award (2018). Dr. Robinson has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals and given over 60 invited talks at international conferences, universities, and at government and industry workshops.
