With reference to the current guiding principles of disability care - normalisation, empowerment and inclusion - institutional living conditions are analysed in terms of their appropriateness. Housing needs and a legal framework based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are considered, as is non-institutional living in the form of existing and future concepts.

About the author










Laurens Günther-Roth works at the Korneuburg District Disability Services as a residential care worker in a fully supported, residential setting. As part of his university studies at the University of Applied Sciences Campus Vienna, he wrote his academic thesis entitled 'Institutional living for people with intellectual disabilities', with the aim of highlighting alternative living arrangements.
