This study surveyed runners in Austria to determine what motivates them to engage in regular, long-term physical activity. Using an online questionnaire based on the Bernese Motive and Goal Inventory (BMZI) developed by Lehnert and colleagues in 2011, data was collected from over 400 runners in Austria. The results show that fitness, health and nature are among the most important motives for running. Social contact and the role model effect of professional runners are not important motivators for runners. Differences in motivation between men and women and between older and younger runners were also identified. In addition to family and friends and work, running is one of the most important areas of life for the majority of respondents.
