Origanum majorana L. is known as marjoram, a medicinal plant rich in essential oils and polyphenols. It is widely distributed in European countries and North Africa. This species is used in traditional medicine because of its many therapeutic properties. The objective of this study is to conduct a phytochemical study and evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of an extract from the Algerian medicinal plant Origanum majorana L. harvested from the OUED SOUF region. Aqueous and methanolic extracts were obtained by maceration using distilled water and methanol as solvents, and essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation of Origanum majorana L. leaves. The yield was 24% for the methanolic extract, 20% for the aqueous extract, and 0.51% for the essential oils. The total polyphenol content in the different extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent method (FCR). The polyphenol contents for the aqueous and methanolic extracts were 123.5 7.75 and 134.4 8.43 mgEAG/g EXT, respectively.
