Description

This book is composed of two sections; the first is dedicated to the fundamental aspects of bioelectrocatalysis and the second is focused on its various applications. Specifically, Part 1 presents a comprehensive approach to the fundamentals of bioelectrocatalysis, starting from the comparison of enzymatic and microbial electrocatalysis to later focus on the discussion of direct vs. mediated bioelectrocatalysis and the challenges and strategies for promoting extracellular electron transfer. Chapters present detailed information on the approaches and techniques used to study the electron transfer processes and to confirm the type of electron transfer taking place (i.e., direct or mediated). Part 2 includes chapters dedicated to the common and emerging applications of bioelectrocatalysis: i) glucometers and continuous glucose monitors, ii) biosensors, iii) biofuel cells and biosolar cells, iv) used water treatment, v) electrosynthesis, and vi) wearable and implantable devices.
