The Education Systems of Europe

The paradoxical character of education which includes at the same time a universalistic value as well as a national property makes the special interest of this handbook. The book gives unique in its form an analytical description of the education systems of all European countries, following common analytical guidelines. These conceptual guidelines try to consider a certain number of criteria concerning presumptions as to the quality of a good education system, as demonstrated by the recent international studies about student performances, such as PISA.The inclusiveness of the geographic field is of special interest for both European and Extra-European readers showing in particular the dynamics of the development in the "new Europe" in its Eastern part compared with the "older" western members of the European Union. Reliable knowledge about the differences of the national systems seems to be necessary in order to understand the common core and the common aim of European integration in the field of education. The question, if there is a common pattern of European education compared with (modern) education outside Europe, may be of particular interest for readers from other parts of the world: to which extent education in its institutionalised form is really universalistic on the one hand although being based upon indigenous patterns on the other hand. The handbook provides many suggestions to investigate and it gives a differentiated analytical data base.
