About the author

Angana P. Chatterji is an anthropologist and feminist historian. She is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of numerous books, including Violent Gods: Hindu Nationalism in India's Present, Narratives from Orissa, Contesting Nation: Gendered Violence in South Asia, and Notes on the Postcolonial Present. She is the lead author of many reports, including BURIED EVIDENCE: Unknown, Unmarked, and Mass Graves in Kashmir, Communalism in Orissa, and Without Land or Livelihood.Arundhati Roy was born in 1959 in Shillong, India. She studied architecture in New Delhi, where she now lives. She is the author of the novel The God of Small Things, for which she received the 1997 Booker Prize, and has written several nonfiction books, including Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers and Walking with the Comrades. She is a contributor to the Verso anthology Kashmir: The Case for Freedom. Roy is the recipient of the 2002 Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Prize.Hilal Bhatt was born in Srinigar and is a freelance Kashmiri journalist.Pankaj Mishra is the multi-award-winning author of numerous books, most recently The Age of Anger: A History of the Present. He writes literary and political essays for the New York Times, New York Review of Books, Guardian, New Yorker, London Review of Books, and Bloomberg View, among other American, British, and Indian publications. His work has also appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, New Republic, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Time, the Independent, Granta, the Nation, n+1, Poetry, Common Knowledge, Outlook, and Harper's.Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics-including Pirates of the Caribbean, Bush in Babylon, The Clash of Fundamentalisms and The Obama Syndrome-as well as five novels in his Islam Quintet series and scripts for the stage and screen. He is an editor of the New Left Review and lives in London.
