Diese Publikation beleuchtet die von 1968 bis 1978 in der Casa Aprile in Carona (Tessin), tätige künstlerische und literarische Gemeinschaft. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Schweizer Künstler David Weiss (1946-2012) und einem engen Kreis von Künstler:innen, deren Werke, Arbeitsprozesse und Gemeinschaft eine Zeit fruchtbarer künstlerischer Kollaboration und Experimentation prägten. In den 1920er- und 30er-Jahren zog Carona Persönlichkeiten wie Maria Braun, Hermann Hesse, Karl Hofer, Kurt Kläber, Niklaus Stoecklin, Lisa Tetzner und Lisa Wenger an. Von 1968 bis 1978 wurde die Carona zu einem Treffpunkt für eine neue Generation von Künstler:innen und Schriftsteller:innen. Das Buch untersucht die utopischen Visionen, die künstlerische Vitalität und den Geist der Epoche anhand des Werks von David Weiss, Esther Altorfer, Anton Bruhin, Maria Gregor, Penelope Margaret Mackworth-Praed, Matthyas Jenny, Urs Lüthi, Meret Oppenheim, Iwan Schumacher, Peter Schweri und Willy Spiller. Essays von Weggefährten, Kurator:innen und Kritiker:innen - gestützt auf Archivmaterialien und Oral History - reflektieren das Vermächtnis, den historischen Kontext, die Ursprünge und die Entwicklung dieser künstlerischen Gemeinschaft und präsentieren neue kunsthistorische Erkenntnisse. Wie es dem damaligen Schaffen entspricht, rekonstruiert Der Traum von Casa Apriledieses kollaborative Netzwerk auf visuelle und spielerische Weise.Mit Texten von Bice Curiger, Stephan Kunz, Virginia Marano, Andreas Schwab und Stefan Zweifel sowie einem Vorwort von Tobia Bezzola. Gemeinsam mit dem MASI Lugano publiziert, erscheint das Buch anlässlich der Ausstellung David Weiss. Der Traum von Casa Aprile: Carona 1968-78 (28. September 2025-1. David Weiss, (*1946/†2012, Zürich), lebte und arbeitete in Zürich, Los Angeles und Carona.

David Weiss wuchs als Sohn eines Pfarrers und einer Lehrerin auf. Nachdem er im Alter von 16 Jahren seine Leidenschaft für den Jazz entdeckt hatte, schrieb er sich an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich ein, wo er sich im ersten Studienjahr mit dem Künstler Urs Lüthi anfreundete. Nachdem er Karrieren als Dekorateur, Grafiker und Fotograf abgelehnt hatte, sah Weiss bald eine Karriere als Künstler als realistische Perspektive. Er studierte an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich (1963-64) und an der Kunstgewerbeschule Basel (1964-65) und arbeitete danach als Bildhauer bei Alfred Gruder (Basel) und Jaqueline Stieger (England). 1967 arbeitete er an der Expo 67 in Montreal, bevor er nach New York reiste, wo er die wichtige minimalistische Kunst jener Zeit kennen lernte. Zwischen 1970 und 1979 veröffentlichte er in Zusammenarbeit mit Lüthi Bücher. In den Jahren 1975-78 verbrachte er viel Zeit mit dem Zeichnen in schwarzer Tinte und hatte Ausstellungen in Galerien in Zürich, Amsterdam, Köln und Rotterdam.

1979-2012 Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Fischli

Seit seinem Tod im Jahr 2012 pflegt und verwaltet The Estate of David Weiss sein Frühwerk aus den Jahren 1968 bis 1981 in Zürich.Tobia Bezzola studierte Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Zürich. Danach war er ebenda Assistent am Lehrstuhl für “Praktische Philosophie und Politische Theorie“, wo er in Philosophie promovierte. Von 1992 bis 1995 war er Assistent von Harald Szeemann, ehe er zum Kurator und anschliessend zum Leiter der Ausstellungsabteilung am Kunsthaus Zürich ernannt wurde. 2013 wechselte er als Direktor zum Museum Folkwang in Essen; seit Januar 2018 ist er Direktor des MASI in Lugano. Er ist Mitglied zahlreicher Stiftungsräte und Vorstände privater und öffentlicher Kulturvereine sowie Gastprofessor an der Accademia di Architettura der Università della Svizzera italiana. Seit August 2018 ist Tobia Bezzola Präsident von ICOM Schweiz.Bice Curiger (*1948, Zürich) ist Kunsthistorikerin, Mitbegründerin und Chefredaktorin der Publikation Parkett, war Kuratorin am Kunsthaus Zürich (1992– 2013) und Direktorin der 54. Biennale die Venezia (2011). Aktuell ist sie die künstlerische Direktorin der Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles.Stephan Kunz (*1962) studied art history, German language and literature, and philosophy in Zurich and Berlin. From 1988-2011, he was curator and deputy director of the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau. In 2011, he moved to the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur, of which he is artistic director.Virginia Marano (she/her) is an art historian and curator. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Lise Meitner Group “Coded Objects”. She holds a PhD in art history from the University of Zurich. Her thesis examined the diasporic dimension in the works of Jewish women sculptors in Post-war New York, previously assimilated to feminism but not yet connected to the question of exile. She was a recipient of several scholarship and research grants from the Swiss government and the University of Zurich. In 2022, she was a SNSF Doc.Mobility fellow in the Art History Department at Hunter College/CUNY. She is the co-founder and coordinator of the research project “Rethinking Art History through Disability” at the University of Zurich. In 2023, she was a fellow researcher at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, working on the PNRR–PEBA project for the Removal of Physical, Cognitive, and Sensory Barriers in Cultural Sites, funded by the NextGenerationEU program. In addition to her academic work, she serves as a curatorial assistant at MASI, Museo d’Arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano. She is a board member of the Fondazione Centro Giacometti and is an advisory board member for the Biennale Bregaglia. She thrives on interdisciplinary collaboration, and her recent interest is in Criptech art, which challenges ableism in the tools and methods of contemporary art, science, and technology. Her research-based work centers on intersectional feminist theory and practice, focusing on innovative curatorial approaches that prioritize decentralization and encourage collaborative practices.Andreas Schwab (*17. Juli 1971 in Bern) ist Historiker und
Ausstellungsmacher.
Er kuratierte zahlreiche Ausstellungen zu den Themen Alternativbewegungen, Körpergeschichte und Literatur.
2012-2019 war Gemeinderat Ressort Bildung von Bremgarten bei Bern, seit 2020 Gemeindepräsident.Stefan Zweifel (*1967, Zürich) ist ein Schweizer Autor, Philosoph, Übersetzer und ehemals Moderator der Schweizer Fernsehsendung Literaturclub. Er übertrug Boris Vian, Raymond Roussel, Rousseau, Proust und de Sade ins Deutsche und schreibt Texte über Theater, Musik, Literatur für die Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Weltwoche und Literaturen.MASI Lugano (Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana) was established in 2015, when two long-standing Lugano museums - the Museo Cantonale d’Arte and Museo d’Arte della Città di Lugano – merged.
