Environmental reconstructions using biomarkers have so far been limited to the involvement of higher plants in sedimentary organic matter. However, the diversity of these compounds in recent geological samples suggests the possibility of establishing a more intimate link between the molecule isolated from the sediment and the organism from which it originated. However, it has remained difficult to define precise indicators of their sources, environmental conditions, or the processes to which they bear witness.Would it be possible to answer this question through the study of biomarkers in matrices derived from two wetlands of different hydrodynamics (the endoreic systems of the Sahel (Moknine-Mahdia) and the mouths of the Gulf of Tunis) and to find unambiguous indicators to trace the history or "paleoenvironment" and the link between a geolipid and its source (biolipid).
