Throughout history, different legitimizing narratives have been articulated with the aim of creating and guaranteeing the protection of intellectual property rights in the international arena. The growing consensus on the centrality of innovation in socio-economic development processes has led to recognition of the strategic importance of knowledge and information. On the other hand, the ability to control the dissemination, circulation and use of these assets is crucial to maintaining a position of power in the global political and economic order. This book examines how the hegemony of the legitimization narrative consolidated by the United States in the last decades of the 20th century is currently being challenged in the international intellectual property regime and how the country has reacted to this process by strengthening regionalism to the detriment of multilateralism. The book offers a stimulating introduction to undergraduate and postgraduate students in International Relations and International Political Economy interested in the theme of the construction/contestation of hegemony on the international stage and, more specifically, in the intellectual property agenda.
