This book focuses on the energy storage system and their application technologies, consolidating the author's theoretical accumulation and practical experience in power energy storage, distributed generation, microgrids, and smart grids in recent years. It is divided into three parts. The first part is an overview, which first focuses on the revolutionary development of the power system and analyzes the role of energy storage in power system frequency regulation, peak shaving, renewable energy integration and microgrids; followed with the introduction of typical energy storage technologies including their current technical principles, development and application trends. The second part focuses on the system composition, grid access topology and control technology of battery and flywheel energy storage; then, the theoretical basis and control methods of hybrid energy storage system with energy-type and power-type of subsystem are analyzed, as well as energy storage big data analysis methods and applications for optimized operation. The third part analyzes the dual mode operation and peer-to-peer control method of microgrid based on energy storage, the method of applying energy storage to the fluctuation suppression and improvement of frequency and voltage regulation characteristics of renewable energy generation, and the optimal dispatching method of virtual power plant including energy storage and distributed generation.
This book aims to build a bridge between energy storage and power system applications from the sight of future development of power system. It is suitable for undergraduate students, graduate students and engineers with a certain level of professional knowledge in energy storage systems, power systems, etc.

About the author

Dr. Xisheng Tang is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor with the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Energy Storage System Technologies Research Team. His research interest includes energy storage system and the applications in power system, microgrid and integrated energy system. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the Sectary General of the IEEE PES Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee- China.
Professor Zhiping Qi is with the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She formerly established and led the Power Grid Technology Research Department. She has deep and systematic research in distributed power generation systems, distributed energy storage, and smart grids. She used to be a visiting scholar of Technical University of Berlin in Germany and University of Calgary in Canada.
Professor Li Kong is the director of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and member of the Engineering Technology Committee of the Academic Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has been engaged in research and industrialization of renewable energy generation, distributed power and energy storage, and AC/DC microgrids for a long time.
