Summary

The letters in the 20th volume document the rapid development of Gottsched’s recently founded Society of Free Arts. The dispute between Maupertuis and Samuel König takes on new dimensions when Voltaire gets involved. His satirical attack on Maupertuis also challenges King Friedrich II; Gottsched’s correspondents comment on the events. Gottsched’s conflict with the theater director shines a light on the dilemmas of Enlightenment theater.
