About the author
Carlos Eduardo Costa de Almeida graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra in 2004 and completed the General Surgery residency in 2012 obtaining the best national classification. He was an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Vascular Surgery at the University of Coimbra till 2021. He is a surgeon at the Head and Neck Surgery Department of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Coimbra (IPO Coimbra) and at the General Surgery Department of Hospital CUF Coimbra. He performs endocrine surgery with neuromonitoring, oncologic surgery, gallbladder surgery, abdominal wall surgery, varicose veins surgery, laser proctological surgery, SiLaC, and he is an expert in minimally invasive surgical techniques. Creator of the Fellowship of Endocrine Surgery held in IPO Coimbra. He lectures about adrenal surgery, thyroid surgery, and neuromonitoring. He is the editor of the Springer book “Posterior Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy. Indications, Technical Steps and Outcomes”, published in 2023. Author of several books and articles about different topics in surgery, and author of the first worldwide report of Almeida-Reis Hernia. Creator and author of the “Surgical Thoughts: A blog about surgery” since 2016. Member of Administration Board of the Portuguese Society for Surgery, from 2020 to 2024. Member of the Endocrine and Head and Neck Surgery Chapter of the Portuguese Society for Surgery, and member of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons.
Francesca Torresan is a consultant surgeon at the Endocrine Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery, at Padova University Hospital, Italy. She graduated in Medicine and completed the residency in General Surgery at Padova University. She has been granted a doctor’s degree in 2022 by the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University, on a study on the excess aldosterone as a mechanism of resistant salt-sensitive arterial hypertension. She is Regional Delegate of the Italian Society of Endocrine Surgeons (SIUEC). She is author of more than 50 original publications in the field of endocrine disorders (H-index 15) with more than 600 citations.
