Belfast teenagers Mel and Sid couldn't be more different. Shy science nerd Mel is planning to study theoretical physics at Cambridge University. Sid, the school badboy, flouts rules, drops classes and dreams of starting his own band. Unexpectedly their universes collide and they fall in love.
Beneath the New Year's Eve fireworks Mel and Sid get pregnant on their first date. In an instant their lives are turned upside-down and they find themselves having to navigate difficult decisions - decisions made all the more complicated by the expectations everyone around them has. Also, this is 2018 and abortion is not yet legal in Northern Ireland.
