The central aim of this book is to highlight some of the reasons why farming families in the municipality of Catuípe (RS) have been suffering major impacts on their family incomes due to heavy indebtedness and consequent defaults. The period from 2006 to 2016 was taken as a reference and the methodology adopted was the interview method with a sample of 50 rural producers from the municipality. The aim was to develop an analysis that could explain the situations that lead these farmers to increase their indebtedness, especially taking into account the current context of economic recession that the country is going through. It was concluded that indebtedness and default are significant in the region studied, a situation motivated not only by climatic issues, but also by producers' lack of knowledge about the characteristics of the credit agreements they have entered into.
