In Westdeutschland wurden mit dem Bau der innerdeutschen Grenze Flugblätter, Zeitschriften und später auch Bücher an gasgefüllten Ballons befestigt, um sie bei entsprechenden Windverhältnissen durch einen zeitgesteuerten Mechanismus auf dem Gebiet der DDR abzuwerfen. Ohne Kontextualisierung könnten die Ballons vieles sein: Kinderspiel, Land Art, performative Installation, meteorologisches Messinstrument oder eben ein Mittel zur Verbreitung politischer Interessen. In Ballons stehen Fotos aus dem Archiv der Staatssicherheit und protokollartige Texte nebeneinander, die den Flug der Transportballons und die Auswirkungen ihrer Landung dokumentieren. In der Zusammenstellung entstehen vor den Augen der Leser·innen Bilder aus dem Alltag in der DDR; ein Alltag voller zerschlagener Dächer, zerrissener Stromkabel und vernichteter Flugblätter; ein Alltag, der so oder so ähnlich gewesen sein könnte.Jens Klein, geb. 1970 in Apolda, lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig. Seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen gezeigt, u.a. im Folkwang Museum Essen, in der Villa Stuck und in den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Er erhielt u.a. den Dokumentarfotografie Förderpreis der Wüstenrot Stiftung, ein Arbeitsstipendium des Kunstfonds Bonn und das DZ Bank Förderstipendium 2021/22.--When the inner-German border was established, West Germans would attach leaflets and magazines - and subsequently books too - to gas-filled balloons installed with a timer mechanism that dropped them in the GDR if wind conditions were favourable. In the absence of any contextualization, the balloons could be many things: a child's plaything, land art, a performative installation, a meteorological measuring instrument, or even a means of broadcasting political concerns. Balloons juxtaposes photos from the Stasi archives with texts in the form of logs documenting the flight of the transport balloons and the consequences of their landing. The images in the compilation vividly convey everyday life in the GDR: a litany of smashed roofs, torn power cables and destroyed leaflets; a routine existence that might have looked this way or something like it.Jens Klein, b. 1970 in Apolda, lives and works in Leipzig.
