Summary

This notebook design comes from the 1830 cover of James Bentham’s The History and Antiquities of the Conventual and Cathedral Church of Ely. The cathedral city of Ely was founded in 673 ad. The original abbey was built, destroyed and rebuilt in various forms before undergoing restorations between 1845 and 1870 that saw key sections rebuilt in an exuberant Decorated Gothic style. It is no wonder that clergyman and antiquarian James Bentham would make documenting the magnificent cathedral his life’s work.
