The analysis of sources characterizing the situation in the system of libraries of the Ukrainian SSR from 1940 to 1980 years of the XX century inclusive is carried out. It is shown that the most important function of libraries of that period was ideological work under the guidance of party organizations. All the work of libraries was permeated with the ideological component of communist orientation. Any activity of libraries, whether it was the compilation of lists of recommended literature, bibliographic work, study of the reader, guiding reading, local history work, organization of clubs and hobby groups, was, first of all, aimed at the formation of communist outlook of the readers. It is also revealed that the libraries of the Ukrainian SSR were the initiators of the creation of library centralized systems, which significantly increased the efficiency of their work and improved the service to readers.
