This book deals with the history of the evolution of the Roman army, both in its organizational aspect and in its armament, both offensive and defensive. Its chain of command, the transmission of orders by means of acoustic or visual signals, the order of the army during the march or during the course of a battle, the hard military instruction of the soldiers, that included both rewards and rigorous punishments, or the daily life of those soldiers in the camps are other aspects that are treated in the present work. Not to mention supplies, salaries and soldiering as a way of life. Not only legions made up the Roman army. There were also the auxiliary troops and above all a navy, or classis, totally necessary to defend an Empire that extended throughout the Mediterranean, but which also needed this fleet for other areas of the Empire far from the Mare nostrum. We can also find in this study the praetorian guard, the urban cohorts and other elite corps or protection of the emperor's life. The army is not only sweat and blood, it is also an instrument of acculturation and Romanization, each of its members carrying their ideas, their religious beliefs, their way of life and their consumption practices, spreading them wherever they went.
