Der Begriff der Wende ist so uneindeutig wie schöpfungsträchtig. Dem Begriff liegt eine tiefe Überzeugung von fundamentaler Veränderung bestimmter Parameter zu Grunde, die alte Deutungsmuster ablöst. Kultur und Literatur reagieren wie ein Seismograph auf die Umbruchsgefühle: Wendepunkte mit den sie begleitenden Unsicherheiten werden künstlerisch wie literarisch verarbeitet. The term 'Wende' is as ambiguous as it is creative. The word, which can be defined differently depending on the context, discipline or motivation of the speaker, seems to have great symbolic power. The term is based on a deep conviction of fundamental change in certain parameters, which replaces old patterns of interpretation. Culture and literature react to feelings of upheaval like a seismograph: turning points and the accompanying uncertainties are processed both artistically and literarily. The contributions in this volume not only show the potential of historical turning points for literature and cultural development, but also address turning points as an interpretive tool for past phenomena.
