This book presents the work of the RILEM Technical Committee 273-RAC on Structural Behaviour and Innovation of Recycled Aggregate Concrete. It provides the guidelines on the changes in the properties of recycled aggregates and how the different countries manage the use of recycled aggregates in construction work. As such, it helps researchers understand some new technologies to improve the qualities of RAC and the enhancement of RAC. Various mixing approaches adopted by the mixing approach, mixture proportioning for RAC using Compressible Packing Model, Particle Packing Method of mix proportioning for RAC and a rational mix design method for RAC are proposed. Further evaluation of the stress-strain relationship and bond behavior of RAC is explored in these guidelines.
The current volume focuses on "Material Properties".

Properties of recycled aggregates and related specifications.- Chapter 2 New technology to improve the properties of Recycled Aggregate Concrete.- Chapter 3 Mix proportion design method of RAC and properties of fresh RA.- Chapter 4 Constitutive relationships of Recycled Aggregate Concrete.- Chapter 5 Long-term properties of RAC and its product.

About the author

Dr. Zengfeng Zhao’s research interests cover the valorization of recycled concrete aggregates and by-products in concrete in order to reduce their environmental impact and CO2 emissions. He is currently a research professor at the College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University. He received his PhD in civil engineering from the University of Lille 1 in France in 2014. He was selected for the Marie Curie fellowship, the Shanghai Leader Overseas Program, and the Shanghai Pujiang Talents Program. He currently involves in eight Technical Committees of RILEM including 273-RAC, 281-CCC, 282-CCL, 303-PFC, 304-ADC, 309-MCP, 313-MMS, and CUC. He is also serving on the editor of Journal of Asian Concrete Federation and managing editor of Low-carbon Materials and Green Construction. He has published over 50 fully reviewed papers and was granted three China Patents.
Dr. Amardeep Singh’s research interests cover low-carbon cementitious materials, utilization of construction and demolition waste in concrete and 3D printing concrete. He graduated from DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, India, with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 2009. He has a Master of Engineering from Dr. B R Ambedkar NIT, India, in 2012, and a Ph.D. from Tongji University, PR China in 2020. He is currently serving as an editor of Asian Concrete Federation Journal. He has published over 48 peer-reviewed papers and was granted one China patent.
Dr. Jianzhuang Xiao (Committee Chair) has been doing fundamental research on the material characteristics and structural behaviours of recycled aggregate concrete for over 20 years. He has won one second-class National Awards of Scientific and Technology Progress in China and 6 first-class Province/Ministry Awards of Scientific and Technology Progress in China. He was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship in Germany in 2004, and in 2024, he was honored with the Humboldt Research Award. He has 82 granted patents (1 in the US, 2 in Australia, 3 in South Africa and 76 in China). He has served as the chair of 23 academic conferences, both international and national. With a total of 563 scientific publications (512 peer-reviewed articles, 11 authored academic books and 40 conference papers). His H-index reaches 73, with 19,738 citations in WOS in January, 2025, and he has been consistently recognized as a World's Top 2% Scientists (2019-2024).
Dr. Yamei Zhang is a Professor in School of Materials Science & Engineering from Southeast University in Nanjing, China. She is also an affiliate professor in the department of civil engineering at the University of British Columbia, Canada, the director of Nanjing Institute for Intelligent Additive Manufacturing. She serves on several national and international academic committees which include the chair of the Committee of concrete 3D printing, the Chinese Ceramic Society; chair of Technical Board, Asia Concrete Federation; and National Convener of RILEM China. She is now an associate editor of the journal of Cement and Concrete Composites and board members of several other international journals. Her research covers cementitious composites, 3D printing, and utilization of solid wastes. Her team has close collaboration with well-known industrial partners including Holcim, CR Cement, China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, and etc. Her work on the utilization of solid wastes in concrete 3D printing was reported by CCTV 9.
