In 1917, Henry Carter and Etta Pearce are reporters for the Bisbee, Arizona newspaper. They are dedicated and driven to find the truth, no matter the cost. Following the backlash after Carter's scathing report on the deportation of striking IWW mine workers, Pearce joins him to cover a murder trial in Texas. There they discover that the authorities likely used unorthodox and illegal methods to convict the alleged assailant. Later, the pair's muckraking expose a political assassination in Phoenix during the Spanish Flu epidemic, they learn the true cost of their efforts.
