The concept of lung age (LA) was first mooted in the 1980s by Morris and Temple. Its aim is to bring smokers face to face with the reality of a PA which, in some cases, may be greater than their chronological age. The smoker would then realize that smoking accelerates premature aging of the lungs.Does this approach help smokers understand the significance of premature lung ageing and the risk of impaired lung function? Can this information improve motivation to quit among active smokers? Could this concept promote smoking cessation?
