Ciro is a Corallino. For most of his decades-long career he has lovingly crafted jewellery from the distinctive red coral of his island home and carved delicate shell cameos. His place in his Guild has always been tenuous, since Corallini walk the fine line between Artiste and Gioiellieri. So he has stayed out of trouble, giving all of his attention to his art and the love of his life, Giuseppe.

But coral carving is a dying art. If he doesn't take on an apprentice soon, it might be too late. The only apprentice he wants is his great-niece who is too young to meet the Guild's standard. Ciro finds himself bending more rules as he becomes entangled in secret Guild projects, special commissions, and a dangerous circle of friends.

As his personal and professional life is exposed to the predatory gaze of the Mercantili Guild, Ciro faces losing it all: his apprentice, his home, his Guild status ... even his life.
