"Doc liked to put beautiful things in his artwork, such as the flute, because it represented music being played to someone's sweetheart," Doc Tate Nevaquaya's wife Charlotte said. "He would say, 'We are not savages. We love, too.' That was the side that he wanted people to see, that Indian People had a way of courting that was beautiful." This biography celebrates the life and accomplishments of master Comanche artist and flute player DOC TATE NEVAQUAYA (1932-1996), Knowledge Keeper of the traditional arts of the Numunu (Comanche) Nation.

About the author

Doc Tate Nevaquaya's solo flute album, Comanche Flute Music Played by Doc Tate Nevaquaya, has a special place in author PAULA J. CONLON's heart. It was listening to the album shortly after its release in 1979 that solidified her decision to become an ethnomusicologist. From 1996 to 2017, Dr. Conlon taught Indigenous and world music at the University of Oklahoma's school of music. Living in Doc Tate Nevaquaya's home state allowed her to work closely with co-authors EDMOND TATE NEVAQUAYA and TIMOTHY TATE NEVAQUAYA on the biography of their father.
