Aung San Suu Kyi
wird am 19. Juni 1945 in Rangun geboren. Sie ist die Tochter
des birmanischen Freiheitskämpfers Aung San, der 1947 ermordet
wird. Mit ihrer Mutter Khin Kyi, die zur Botschafterin in Indien
ernannt wird, verläßt sie 1960 ihr Heimatland. In
Oxford, wo sie Philosophie, Politik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften
studiert, lernt sie ihren Mann, den Tibetologen Michael Aris,
kennen. Das Ehepaar hat zwei Söhne, Alexander und Kim.
Im Jahre 1988 kehrt Aung Son Suu Kyi nach Birma zurück, ans
Sterbebett ihrer Mutter. Bald darauf setzt sie sich an die Spitze
der Protestbewegung gegen das Militärregime; 1989 wird sie
für nahezu sechs Jahre unter Hausarrest gestellt.
