Marco Antonio Mendoza Bustamante possesses a prodigious memory, always on the hunt for facts that, over time, become the building blocks of meticulous research. It is undeniable that his primary interest lies in his homeland; at the slightest provocation--and sometimes without any--he launches into a dialogue recalling anecdotes, dates, events, and notable figures from Hidalgo and Tulancingo. His narration can range from the earliest inhabitants, among them the mythical Quetzalcóatl, to the traditional preparation of barbacoa, not to mention Felipe Ángeles, the cathedral of his hometown, and Emperor Maximilian's passage through what is now the state of Hidalgo. But Mendoza Bustamante is not just a captivating conversationalist or storyteller--he is an intellectual capable of observing social phenomena or simple events and turning them into conceptual interpretations, thereby revealing their historical consequences.
