Gérard Garouste, born in 1946, is one of the most important contemporary French painters and an uncompromising proponent of figuration. Drawing from mythology, literature, biblical texts and Talmudic studies, his paintings relentlessly ask questions and unsettle the viewer, like a game whose rules are perpetually being reinvented.
The retrospective organised by the Centre Pompidou offers a unique and a deep insight into the unclassifiable career of Gérard Garouste, the « restless man ».
